Phew! I’m glad I got that addiction off my chest!
People call me the “fitness freak” and ask me for advice. But to be honest, I wasn’t always this way.
I’ve taken dance classes since I was 7, so it wasn’t like I was completely inactive, but exercise wasn’t a staple in my life. My journey didn’t start with a clear decision of “I’m doing this” or “I’m going to lose weight” – it actually fell into my lap at the perfect time.
Where it all began…
Towards the end of my senior year in high school (2006) I went to the doctor & remember stepping on the scale… 144!
WHAT?! I thought to myself, “I have never weighed that much in my life!”
I am 5’6” and was always in the 130 range! WHAT HAPPENED?!
Okay okay…let’s be honest, I knew what happened.
I wasn’t eating healthy whatsoever & only “working out” was going to dance class. When I was 16 years old I started working in a restaurant. I had the mindset that I could eat whatever I wanted & so I did! I drank pop and probably eat chicken strips with French fries & ranch every night after my shift was over. Let’s not even talk about high school lunches or having the freedom to stop at any fast food chain I wanted. So here I was 144 and NOT happy. Plus the lingering “freshmen 15” was quickly approaching! ah!
When I found the exercise gods…
This is a blur – I’m not sure if I found Turbo Jam immediately after being weighed or right before, it all blends together now! Anyway… I found Turbo Jam sitting in my family DVD collection. I figured another thing my mom ordered off QVC. From the outside of the “5 Rockin’ Workouts” box I thought I should give it a shot it looked like the people were having fun, I immediately fell in love!
I went into the basement right that minute I found it & popped in the DVD. Honestly, I don’t even think I did the “Learn & Burn” because I thought it would be “too easy” for me. Come on I’m 17 and these people are moms, I could take them! Boy was I wrong! I was wrong, but I was HOOKED!
That summer before college I remember being in my basement everyday just to get my workout in, that meant at 11pm if I had to because that was the only time. I have funny voicemails on my phone from friends saying “Cat, stop Turbo Jamming and come hang out!” I had a challenge with myself that I’d NEVER stop a workout once I started. I also enjoyed it so much I tried to see how many days in a row I could do it without missing… 37!
Within the first 3 months of Turbo Jam I immediately lost 15 pounds.
The HARD Part
Exercise doesn’t do it alone. Don’t get me wrong, in my eyes that’s the FUN part. The not so fun part is controlling what you eat!
I kept a journal where I wrote down everything I was eating, including snacks, drinks, 2 m&m’s, EVERYTHING. I look back now & think I wouldn’t eat half of the stuff that I ate to lose weight, but I didn’t know any better. I remember eating lean cuisines for dinner, but I’m not going to lie, it worked. Now I know better about nutrition (though I’m NO WHERE near an expert) I’d rather have a grilled chicken breast & veggies over a lean cuisine any day.
I even changed the way I ate at work, come on I had to! As much as I love chicken strips, those would have to be a treat! I ate grilled chicken breast, egg white omelets, salads with romaine lettuce & shish kabobs.
The weight loss is exciting and many people based their success on NUMBERS. However, I think the biggest take-away from starting this journey is how exercise has helped shape the person that I am today. I have changed the way I look and feel about myself, outside & inside!!
Yes, I have muscles that I’ve never seen before and they are defined! I feel toned, strong and most importantly, confident.
I know my numbers don’t sound that amazing & I always told myself “I don’t have a story”, we normally get excited about the stories when people lose 60, 70, 80+ lbs, but honestly Turbo has changed my life, my body, my confidence and my mind. I am an extremely happy person who doesn’t let too much stress get to me, thanks exercise gods!
Exercise is a way of life! I didn’t know how much I needed it until I started. I look back and think, man if I never give that a shot I would NOT be where I’m at.
I honestly could get extremely worked up over this and probably even cry. If you don’t want to do it for yourself, do it for the people around you. Changing my lifestyle has made me a better person, daughter, friend, girlfriend, everything! Heck I even TEACH fitness classes now, it’s that important to me! I’ve maintained & made so many friendships around exercise, that’s so exciting to me!
I have tried other programs and have never gone back because I have never made a connection with the instructor, Chalene, or had this much FUN! My family and friends don’t think twice when I talk about what Chalene said that day; her name is a common thing in my house. Fitness is something that means the world to me and it all started with Turbo.
If you are looking to lose 10, 15, 60 pounds, I’m going to be honest, it’s going to take TIME, SWEAT and DEDICATION. Nothing else will get you there.
